CHOCOLAT CHIP COOKIES

Origin of chocolate chip cookies

The chocolate chip cookie is a beloved American classic, but its origins can be traced back to a happy accident in the 1930s.

The story goes that Ruth Wakefield, the owner of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, was trying to make a batch of chocolate cookies for her guests when she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She decided to use broken pieces of Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate instead, hoping that they would melt and spread throughout the cookie dough. However, the chocolate pieces remained intact, creating delicious pockets of melted chocolate in each cookie.

Wakefield’s creation became an instant hit with her customers, and the recipe for “Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies” was published in a Boston newspaper. Nestle saw the popularity of the recipe and approached Wakefield with a deal: they would provide her with all the chocolate she needed for the rest of her life in exchange for the right to use her recipe on their chocolate packaging. Wakefield agreed, and the recipe has since become a household staple.
