Bread and Butter Pudding is a classic British dessert that has been enjoyed for centuries. The dish is made by layering slices of bread with butter, sugar, and raisins or other dried fruit, then pouring a mixture of eggs, milk, and cream over the top before baking it until golden brown.
The origins of bread-and-butter pudding can be traced back to the 17th century when frugal housewives would use up stale bread and leftover ingredients to create a cheap and filling dessert. It was a popular dish during World War II when rationing meant that fresh ingredients were scarce, and people had to be creative with what they had. There are many variations of bread-and-butter pudding, but the basic recipe remains the same. Some people like to add cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor, while others substitute the raisins for chocolate chips or other dried fruits. The dish can be served hot or cold and is often accompanied by custard or cream.
